Waterloo Watercolor Group
The 2018 Fall WWG Member Juried Exhibit

North Hills Gallery, 2018

Entries Closed

Juror: Alexis Lavine, NWS

When I select paintings for a show or designate the award winners, I look for certain qualities, including good design, personal expression, and a fresh take on whatever the subject might be.  I think that a painting stands out from the rest, when the artist has found a new way of expressing its theme, whether it may be figurative, floral, architectural, landscape, or abstract.   You might find it curious that I do not consider technical skill to be at the top of my list.  We all know that getting watercolor to behave and cooperate is a challenge, but I believe that those other attributes are ultimately more important.  And then there is the WOW factor.  When I look at a painting and the word "Wow!" escapes my lips ... sometimes along with the thought, "I wish I had thought of that," or "I wish I could DO that," then I know that the WOW factor is seriously at work.  And the WOW factor surpasses all!

Media   Acceptable painting media include watercolor, gouache, acrylics, egg tempera and casein paints as well as watercolor pencils, crayons and water-soluble inks.  Mediums, gels, gesso and other painting supplements may be used. Pastels, gold and silver leafing are acceptable as long as water-based media is dominant.  No water-based oils. Collage is acceptable using hand-painted white papers painted with water-based media.
Substrates   Acceptable papers/supports include cotton rag, oriental papers, synthetic paper (YUPO), and any kind of coated paper or board.  No commercially colored or printed papers allowed.
Framing Requirements : Presentation is as important as the painting. Frames, mats, acrylic, backing and wiring must be clean, neat, secure and follow these guidelines:
  • Mats, if used, must be white, off white, or pale neutral. One narrow colored liner may be used. Mats are recommended.
  • Acceptable frames include metal or wood non-ornate frames in black, white, gold, silver, bronze, pewter, or dark colors and wood stains. Frames should be no wider than 2.5 inches.
  • The maximum frame size is 42 inches in width due to venue space and weight.
  • Every painting must be under acrylic (like Plexiglas).  No glass due to safety and venue rules.
  • Paintings must be wired from side-to-side with screw-in hangers. D-rings recommended. No saw-tooth hangers. When hanging, stretched wire should be 3" from the top of the frame.
  • Labels from this prospectus should be placed in the upper left corner on the back of each painting.
Exhibitions will be juried by Alexis Lavine who will be knowledgeable in the WWG’s entry guidelines, and her decisions will be accepted as final. Every effort will be made to allow the juror to work without undue influence.
Due care will be used in handling the artist's work.  WWG will not be responsible for the theft, loss or damage to works submitted.
